What is a survivor’s mindset?
Is it something in particular or something arbitrary and vague?
More importantly, do you own any of this commodity already? Maybe you have a limited supply and would benefit greatly from knowing how to increase your holdings? Or is it a case of you have whatever you were blessed with via genetics and hereditary inheritance and nothing more?
If you don’t have any of it, or a limited supply of the resource, does that mean you’re destined for further calamity in a disaster or tough economic times?
Not necessarily – but it does mean people might want some distance between themselves and you next time you are on a doomed flight, or working together in a struggling business….especially if you are supposed to be their leader!
So, are you their leader? I’m not just talking about your “title”. In a group of your peers do they naturally look to you before answering questions, possibly taking their cue from you and how you might respond to that question?
Have you ever heard the term counter-factual thinking? Why is this skill one of your most powerful allies in a survival situation and business environment? This is not just for yourself, but for the people around you, too!
It is important because the same mental skills that would keep you, your friends and family alive in a true disaster, will also help guide your team through tough economic times as well – this is true whether you are their leader through title, natural abilities, or both.
That is what this presentation is all about – developing your ability to survive…anything.

Why did you create the Birkdale Flash Mob?
“Anything that can make me smile after a long day at work – will probably make other people smile, too. After watching the Oprah event, my wife suggested I do something similar around here. That’s what got it started.”
2) What type of experience did you want to create for the community and/or the participants?
“More than anything else I wanted to create a sense of fun! That and make sure we encouraged all ages to participate – most of the people my age (including me) didn’t know what a flash mob was, that was something else I wanted to change. Lastly, I wanted an event whole families could do together, from rehearsal to the actual day!”
3) Leading up to the event, you had to garner interest to make this a success. It takes a commitment for someone to learn the dance in order to participate in this event. Why do you feel so many people took hours to learn the dance to participate in a 3-minute event?
“I honestly believe there are so many things out there out of our control that will make you unhappy if you aren’t guarded all the time. The news, on any given evening, is enough to make you want to run and hide – for once, most folks realized they could take control of a happy event: That they could play an active role in bringing smiles to themselves and their family and friends, this was all the incentive they needed to commit the time to learning the dance!”
And what “experience” did you have to sell-in to potential participants to get them to take the time to learn a dance for this? (I noticed that your YouTube videos and Fbook notes were very motivational – was that the strategy you took?)
“As far as motivating people to join us – some of the same reasons as above apply, but one important addition needs to be mentioned; most people are naturally very motivated, they may not be motivated to do the same things as you, but they are motivated to accomplish their own goals. Nearly everyone that I know works bloody hard, day in and day out, whether it’s a “job” or raising kids. Happiness, even for a brief few minutes, is a reasonably easy sell to those kinds of people.
Those people that are unmotivated, I find, are generally unhappy folks – and unfortunately there isn’t much you can do to motivate them, no matter what you say…you just have to know where to expend your energy most wisely; there’s little point in flogging a dead horse, is there?”
4) Did this event help promote your business? And if so, was it successful?
“This event was successful in its goal of getting a group of people together from the community in order to have fun.
I’ve received a lot of emails from a lot of happy people about this event, and if the association with my name is positive for them, then I’m sure as heck not going to complain…hahahaha!
The next time someone is running around trying to find a Keynote Speaker or Teambuilding Leader for their own event, or company function, hopefully I’ll feature high on their list of possibilities.
In the meantime, I’m already working hard on another Flash Mob. It will be different in as much as the activity will change, and I’ll also apply some of the lessons learned from organizing the first event. As for the end goal, that won’t change for any of the flash mobs that I organize, fun for everyone, kids to Grandparents, and anyone that has that same objective will be welcome!”
